As a store employee, would you have a legal right to do this?

Let's say a group of thieves ran into the store and grabbed a bunch of merchandise, then tried to run out of the store. Could you punch them, bowl them over with a shopping cart, tackle them, trip them up with cooking oil, or try to impede them in any way? What if they had knives or guns?
